Thursday's class (4-3-08)

Presentations began today. After each presentation, students filled out a journal entry about each presenter. These were the journal questions:

1. Did the presenter have a clear objective? (1 - 5 points )

2. What the graph useful in helping the presenter accomplish their objective? (1-5 points)

3. Did the presenter give a good presentation? (1-5 points)

4. What was most memorable or beneficial to you about the presentation?

After the conclusion of presentations, students had to answer the following four questions about linear equations:

1. Write an equation for the line that passes through the points (2, 11) and (5, 20).

2. Write and equation for the line that has a slope of 4 and y-intercept of 7.

3. Write the equation of a line that has a slope of 7 and passes through the point (2,18)

4. Write the equation of a line that has a y-intercept of (0,5) and passes through the point (4, -11)

Excel Day

Today we learned how to use Excel to find the line of best fit.

Thursday, March 27, 2008

March 27, 2008

The graph above is the graoh from today classwork. It includes answer on the question:
1) Draw a line of best fit
2)Find the slope and y-intercept
3) Come up with a story to describe this graph
4) Before graphing, what would you hypothesis have been?

After working on the "Do Now" we worked on our Benchmarks and recieved help if we needed any.

Scribe Post 3.26.08

So the day starts off with the usual “do now” and Mr. Rochester says that the questions will be just like the benchmark. Then after the kids decide to quiet down he goes around and observes some kids and how they are doing with the “do now” and while he was doing that Mr. Lehmann comes in to discuss matters about calculators and ordering them. After he finishes talking to Mr. Lehmann he waits a few minutes and then explains the “do now”. Now he has explained the answers for us and says that to do something good for the benchmark we need common sense…and Ozzie was singing Taylor Swift’s “Tear Drops on my Guitar”. Now after Ozzie sings, Mr. Rochester tells us to upload the classwork and one graph from our benchmark and that we can work on it now. Soon he decides to example a graph and explains “the line of best fit”.

all we did on march 13, 2008 was we did a graph and took notes. We talked about slope and y- intercept. we did some example. We also talking about what we doing for our benchmark.

Anthony Harley Scribe 3/12/07 Wednesday

IN todays class we learned how to find the slope. The slope is how you get from one point to the next
Example: Rise/Run

Y2-Y1/X2-X1

Example: 2,7
3,9
rise2/run 1

Example: 4,11
1,5 rise/run = Down 6/ left 3

-6/-3=2

Emily Maggiano SCRIBE 3-10-08 Monday

In class we first started with a journal which we were to find the formula used for the x & y input and output of each chart. Then we graphed the coordinates on the same graph using "Sketchpad". If we finished that in class we were to complete a worksheet using similar problems from the journal and graph them as well on a separate page using "Sketchpad." We were told our benchmark in class and that a proposal is due 3-12-08.

Today in class we worked on a Warm-Up. It was a review from Thursday, just to see if we remembered what we had learned.
This was the warm-up

If last years population was 12,000 people and the previous year was 3% less than that. What was the population last year.

So the equation would be
12,000/x = 103/100
And you multiply 12,000 by 100 and x by 3 so you'd get

103/x = 1,200,000

You divide 103 by 103x and 1,200,000 by 103

x=11,650

We also did a classwork sheet.

Class Discussion

Today in Algebra we had a class discussion revolving around the use of certain words within the SLA community. Their was an incident that occurred involving the use of the word "Gay." Words such as "No homo" or "Gay" are being ban from the SLA community because it offend others within the SLA family, "It will be seen as a hate word and those who use it will be punished" says staff members Ms.Weinraub & Ms.Hull. After this announcement there and uproar of controversy occurred over the ban on these words. We discussed in the class as to whether words such as "No homo" or "Gay" should be used or not. Some students disagree with the banning of such words ",They can't tell us was to say" an SLA student protested. Others believe that their "Stepping on eggshells" just to please on group and or minority. Some have protested that if you wish to use these words (No homo or Gay) "Why not pull out other words, the "N" word or Cracker..."

For more information or opinions of the baning of these words check the forum on SLA talk "What is o.k to say."

Monday's algebra class started out slowly. Then We had to complete a math dominoes worksheet version A. This was worked on all class period. Mr Rochester with the help of student put equations on the board to help us if we were to get stuck and to help complete work. Also Mr Rochester made the announcements that the protions test (room scale drawings) are due friday 2/29/08.

Today the class was working on their sketches of the class for their project. different groups split up and went around drawing and measuring different parts of the class. After Roch. handed out the homework and class work assignments, people eventually started working on them, too. the program that we used to do part of the homework was called Sketch Up. It helps us and allows us to view and construct 3D figures. This is what consumed most of our period during class.

Today in class Mr. Rochester did not talk much. We averaged our second quarter grades to start off the class. Then, We did our class work and homework (if we had time), which were posted on moodle. We had a moodle chat going on in class. Instead of Mr. Rochester helping us with everything, we helped each other.
[and by the way, if Mr. Rochester starts another chat for us again, do not "beep" anyone. It is highly annoying and distracting.]

We checked the classwork and homework and went over them. We learned about Similar Figures which is the relationship (ratio) between the corresponding sides of two figures are equivalent. For Example compare two rectangles

1st rectangle: length of 2, width of 4
2nd rectangle: length of 4, width of 8

then we had to complete classwork
he showed us an example of #6 on the class work
He showed us that when you want to check if you have the right answer you should divide the numbers in the fraction to get decimals and if the decimals are the same then that’s the right answer.

Today, We talked about Determining Equivalent Fractions on the smart board. Mr. Rochester asked the class how to determine if fractions are equivalent. Graham answered by saying that you can find a common denominator to determine whether the fractions are common. We also determined that cross multiplication is another way: 1/2=2/4 - cross multiplying the 1 and 8, and 2 and 4 will give you the product of eight, which means they are equivalent. We also figured that by just dividing the fractions we would know if they are equivalent: 1/2, 4/8, they both equal .5 or 1/2.
